Earth Day 2012

If you were to ask me when Earth Day was started, my guess would be within the lat ten years.

Growing up (I was born in 1974) I don't remember ever hearing about Earth Day, and I don't remember hearing anything about it during my college years (1992-1996).  So I decided to do a little research about Earth Day for myself and will share what I learned with my readers.

When is Earth Day?  April 22 is the official Earth Day, although many communities have an Earth week or Earth month in April.

What year was Earth Day started?  1970.

Who founded Earth Day?  Gaylord Nelson, who at the time was a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin.

Where was the first Earth Day celebrated? Only in America, 20 million people took part in the celebration!

What year did Earth Day go global? 1990.

What can I do for Earth Day?  Change a habit.  Volunteer.  Plant a garden or tree.  Install solar panels.
Turn off the lights.  Go paperless.  Use eco-friendly products.  Give unused items away.

Most of this information came from the Earth Day Network website.  I highly recommend checking out  all the information they have!  I was able to learn everything I ever wanted to know and more about Earth Day!
