What I've Learned in 2008

1. It's going to take me a long time to get to my 100th post!
2. Life with potty-trained twin boys is a little easier than life with twin boys in diapers.
3. I can go a whole month without eating ANY chocolate.
4. A seven year old can really "get it" on a mission trip to Mexico.
5. Dropping off our daughter at college was really weird. In a good way.
6. No matter how many distractions I pack, my little boys are not quit ready to sit through a Christmas Eve service and act like angels.
7. The girls I met my first week in college at Indiana University will always be my friends.
8. It's a bad idea to take your seven year old with you to work with honey bees.
9. I cherish wholeheartedly the 2 hours a week my boys are at preschool.
10. At least one holiday a year, our family will be sick.

There have been many more life lessons learned this year. These are just a few that stick out in my mind right now. We are looking forward to a great 2009 and whatever it brings our way! Happy New Year.

Christmas is Coming!

We have had lots of fun getting ready for Christmas. Between the cookies, parties, and visits with Santa, we have stayed very busy. Megan is currently in Colorado, and Steve and Noah are headed out there this Friday. So that leaves me and the twins at home until Christmas Eve when everyone gets back. We have been plagued with illness since Thanksgiving, so hopefully this means a healthy Christmas. Last Christmas, we were very sick, and all the family that came to our house ended up sick also. I've been disinfecting and airing out the house on a regular basis. I finally got to go see Fireproof and highly recommend it. That's all for now.

What Every Girl Wants For Her 11th Anniversary

Our 11th wedding anniversary was Saturday. It also happened to be the day my husband got picked for a special deer reduction hunt for the state of Indiana. So being the kind wife that I am, my "deer" husband got to go hunting with a friend. They both were able to get a deer which means lots of venison in our freezer and money that we will save! I really cannot complain.

Funny Random Pics

This is a picture of Devin or Michael Motorcycle (his preferred name). He is sporting some Army issued reading glasses that my husband has had for years. Every once in a while we find them, and everyone has fun wearing them. This picture cracks me up!

Noah decided to grow his hair out for locks of love. Will he really let it grow that long? Time will tell. In the meantime, he had fun with the hair glue I found at the Walmart clearance aisle.

Random Thoughts by Denise

2. My frontal sinus is killing me. It is chock full o' snot!

3. It's going to be a looooong hunting season here at our home.

6. This is is the first year (that I can remember) that I have the day after Thanksgiving off work. I am so excited.

7. I really, really want to go see the movie Fireproof, but don't know when I will get to :(

Where did my blogging mojo go?

My friend Susan left me a comment to get blogging! Like most things in my life, it's all or nothing. Some days I get everything I want to get done, and others are complete wastes. One of the blogs I love to read is Cindy. She is a funny gal, and every year she has a Choctoberfest. I think next October I will just show up at her house. I copied this from her for some bloggy inspiration.

*Watched...
The Office and Grey's Anatomy from last week, so I'm all ready for tonight!

*Cleaned...
The boys' drawers and closets out. Lots of Rubbermaid totes with little boy clothes I will never need again.

*Wondered...
If I will get deferred from jury duty?!?

*Got...
A package containing the twin's Christmas gifts from Meme. She is on the ball!

*Met up with...
All the fun MOPS moms yesterday.

*Received...
A Thanksgiving card from our financial planner. Too funny!

*Cried...
When I found the VeggieTales sweatshirt my 7 year wore when he was 2.

*Reunited with...
lots of old high school friends on Facebook! Facebook is like crack (or so I've heard!)

*Devoured...
Peppermint ice cream that I bought last night. It was sooo good!

*Rejoiced...
For the fact that my husband & I have great jobs.

*Read...
A Cedar Cove Christmas by Debbi Macomber. I've never read her books before, and just found it randomly on the library shelf.

*Found...
some great deals at the Dollar Tree to decorate for our MOPS Christmas brunch.

*Partied...
Last Friday night the boys and I partied at our friend's house while the guys were hunting.

*Forgot...
To start our crock pot dinner this morning.

*Laughed out loud...
at my husband's text message.

*Wished...
I didn't have to do 3 more loads of laundry today.

To Wii or Not to Wii

Last night my friend Becky and I took a trip to Costco to shop and browse. I think we spent more time in the toy aisles than anything else. At the front entrance they had their Wii display. I've been contemplating getting one for the boys for Christmas. So I started adding up the price of the console, an extra hand controller, numb-chucks, age appropriate games, and the list goes on... The minimum amount I would spend would be around $300. So we kept talking and thinking about it the whole trip.

Later at Starbucks (because all shopping trips must include Starbucks!) Becky brought up our Mexico mission trip we went on in March (just 7 months ago). She said it was crazy that we were sitting around thinking how we were going to spend $300 at Christmas when others so close to us have so little. And yes it is crazy! I am almost certain the little boy Noah befriended could care less about a Wii. I pray the Lord will help me remember this more often!

Tuttles Orchard

We went to our local pumpkin patch for pumpkins, apples, apple cider slushies (the best ever!), and for lots of fun. Megan and her roomie/best friend, Michelle, went with us. It was loads of fun running around on such a nice day.

Check out my blog on Monday. I have a really cool giveaway for the bloggy carnival. It involves chocolate.

Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See?

Both boys got to bring home brown bear from their preschool class for 2 days. We had lots of fun reading stories (over & over) about bears. One bear came with a red scarf, and on day one we had to take the scarf off so they would look the same. I sent copies of the picture to their classrooms.

*note* Dalton was trying to put the bandaid on an old scratch on his forehead. The bandaid has been on for 2 days now, and he won't take it off!

Fun Times

I obviously don't feed my children enough. When they get really hungry, I tell them to just go lick the table. And they do.

When dad gets home everyone wants a ride on the motorcycle. Trust me when I say he drives very slowly like this. I'm sure this could be on a poster of "what not to do with your children"!

Tonight is the big semi-annual kids clothing sale that I drag my husband to. We go with some neighbors and work setting up, then get to pre-shop before the sale on Saturday. We always find good cheap stuff and end up having lots of fun!

The Boys

What have we been up to lately? School, preschool, flag football, and just being boys! Here are some recent pics of the gang.
Snipe was very excited about the frog mommy found while mowing.

If you know Moose at all, this picture needs no explanation!

We have friends who have 3 boys and a dirt bike also. We got to ride with them on Sunday afternoon. Tons of fun!!

September

Last week the little boys started preschool at our local parks department. They are in separate classes (so far)! I could not get them to pose for a picture together, so I settled for the two of them walking down the sidewalk together. I'm sure this picture will reappear at their high school graduation.
For Labor Day, I agreed to go camping for one night. That is about my limit! The past two times I went camping it rained. But this time we had great weather. We ended up at Jellystone PArk in Knightstown. Yogi Bear made a special appearance, but the boys did not care for him!

Summer is officially over!

Today was the first day of 2nd grade for Noah. It was only a half day, so he survived. We'll see how tomorrow is with a full day! The week before school started, we had to cram in everything we hadn't had a chance to do. This picture was taken when I pulled into the driveway after a long day with our cousins!

Summer's Almost Over!

I cannot believe school starts in 8 days! It's amazing how fast the summer has gone. We went to Great Wolf Lodge and Newport Aquarium last week. Noah, our future marine biologist, loved the aquarium. Sea creatures are his thing!

Pray for Marj

Please pray for my friend Marj who is expecting twin boys. She was admitted to the hospital Saturday and will remain there until the babies are born. She has a sweet 3 year old Ian who my boys adore and they live in our neighborhood. My twins and Ian will be going to preschool together this fall! Check out her cute blog and give her some encouragement if you feel led.

It all started with a few gallons of paint

So about a month ago, I decided I wanted to paint my bedroom. Home Depot was having a paint sale, so I picked out a great color, Sweet Georgia Brown. I wanted to do a chocolate brown and blue bedroom. My bedroom has mauve faux paint. It's really not pretty. My husband liked the paint color and decided we should paint downstairs first, because no one really ever sees our bedroom. He also decided to install a wood laminate floor (he's handy like that!). Our carpet was very nasty after the weeks of potty training. So we finally got that project done.

This week, my parents took Noah and Megan to Colorado with them. I wanted to do a room makeover as a surprise for Noah. So we have painted, trimmed, and put in a new closet organization system. We are almost done...they get home Saturday. I told my husband we have to take a break from all these projects. He is wore out! He deserves a break!! So my bedroom will have to wait.

During all this construction, I found these books. I am hooked! My mom told me about these book a while ago, and when I found them at the library I was so excited. I can't stop reading.

What am I stockpiling?!?

There has been lots of buzz about stockpiling. I have a friend whose father has been stockpiling gas, water, and food for some time now. I try not to get caught up in the "what ifs?" and trust completely in God for my provisions. He takes care of the birds, right? But this weekend at my scrapbook retreat I found out some big news!!

Creative Memories is going to a true 12x12 scrapbook. What are they thinking?!? I have been using their books for over 8 years, and never knew their 12x12 pages and albums weren't really 12x12!! So they are discontinuing the pages that I have used. There was a consultant there, and between my mom, sister, and I we bought all of her page refills and protectors! Some people are worried about food and water, but not me. If there is a crisis, at least I can scrap!!

A Crafter's Paradise

If you live anywhere near the Hoosier state, you must check this place out! My mom, sister, and I got to spend last weekend there. We were able to scrapbook our little hearts out, and we ate some great food. My favorites were the peach trifle and the chicken wraps! Deeeelicious!! We were treated like royalty the entire weekend. The owner said she changes her menu quarterly, so we may have to go back in the fall to check it out. It was great to get away for a bit and just relax.

Our Summer Thus Far

So what do I do with three very high energy boys all day?!? I find lots of things to keep them busy in hopes of tiring them out. We had a week of VBS at our church, we have friends who gave us pool access, we've gone to the dentist, signed up for the library reading club, and we've even gone to the free kid's movies. We are also remodeling rooms galore.

How to Flip!

I was one of those moms who said my kids would never have a trampoline. I have worked in the operating room for 11 years and have seen my fair share of trampoline injuries! But kids dads can be persistent and have a way of making moms change their minds! So we have had our trampoline for about 3 years now. All of our kids and neighbors love it. Thankfully there have been no ER visits. Noah who just turned 7 in March can do an amazing front flip. I think his red slippers make all the difference. I might get some red slippers and try a flip myself!!

My Father-in-Law

So if anyone wants to know what my husband will look like in twenty years, here you go. Just kidding! But seriously my father-in-law drove from Pueblo, Colorado to power wash my fence! (He also came to see his granddaughter graduate from high school) He's been working hard since his arrival. I love it when things get marked off my to-do-list.

There Are Very Few Total Packages

Today on the way to Noah's field day, my radio was somehow on AM 1070. I have no idea who was talking or what station it was on. But there was a man talking about this topic. It was all about the NBA (I think he was trying to convince people that it is not rigged). He was talking about the Utah Jazz and how they have the best home record, but perform poorly on the road. He proceeded to talk about people in general and how there are few total packages.

This reminded me of a conversation I had with my husband the other day. I told him I want to be a great wife, a nice (all the time!) mom, a good friend, and to always eat healthy. I said if I could just do all of the above, I would be a happier person. So basically I want the total package. It is so hard to do all of these things individually, let alone together! I don't know if I this is something I will ever accomplish on this earth.

My Asthma Attack

Today we went to church for a staff pitch-in luncheon. As we were walking into the church, another mom and her child were walking in also. Her little boy was crying, so I offered to carry her large crock pot so she could pick up her son. So I go down the hall to the room we are eating in, and Devin and Dalton start running the other direction towards the children's wing. My husband decides to go find them while I drop off the meatballs and the pie I brought. So Steve returns and says the boys are not down there. So I go into super freak mommy mode. There are several unlocked doors that go outside (the preschool was in session), and they are no where to be found! I start sprinting outside around the church screaming. There are people practicing for a driving test in the parking lot who call the police. No one has seen them. I run to the lunch room and ask scream for help. So more of us start running towards the children's wing and they are walking out of one of the classrooms. (Devin has a ball he found in his hands, of course!)

So the children are found, and we go to the lunch. My appetite was still somewhere running around the church, my adrenaline was pumping, and I could hardly breathe! The boys eat like nothing happened (because to them, nothing happened!). Then we come home.

Happy Mother's Day!

Do my kids know their mother or what? Megan and Noah both picked out dark chocolate for me! They are the best. I was so excited to see this first thing this morning! While getting ready for church, Dalton said "I like chocolate squares too!" I told him he would have to wait until after lunch for chocolate!

May is Crazy!!

So May is already flying by! Don't blink or it will be June. I am in the midst of wrapping up the MOPS year (tomorrow is our graduation brunch), trying to get ready for a garage sale (this Saturday), going to baseball games, and planning for a graduation open house. So I have been kind of really busy! Lots of things have gotten neglected, but we are still surviving somehow. Here are some recent pictures of the kids.
I cannot believe Megan is graduating. She is such a cute, smart, and funny girl! I am so proud of her.

Noah has been playing baseball for the first time this spring. We have fun watching him and are anxiously waiting his first hit!

Dalton has candy for breakfast a lot (not really). This particular morning he snuck downstairs and got suckers and Nerds out of the cabinet all by himself. Such a big boy!

Devin loves anything to do with a ball. I think if any of our children have athletic potential, it's him. That boy can hit, throw, or kick anything!!

My spring pedicure

Once upon a time my sister use to make fun of my toes. She called them snausages (like the dog treats). She would chase me around the house singing the song from the commercial. "Snausauges. snort. snort. snausages" I know I made fun of my sister, but I can't remember anything specific right now. So years later, I don't think my toes look that bad. I got a very relaxing pedicure on Saturday (I almost fell asleep!). This was my awesome Christmas gift from Pat and Heather. I am so excited to be ready for my flip flops.

Wallpaper Woes

We moved into our current house on Labor Day weekend 2005. The very next weekend we found out about 4 month old twin boys who needed a home immediately. So that weekend we welcomed Dalton into our family, and Devin joined us 3 days later. He was still recovering from a bad infection at Riley Hospital. I had big plans of remodeling which included lots of wallpaper stripping. After the boys came into our lives, our plans quickly shifted. Our new plans included finding cribs, clothes, bottles, etc. So almost 3 years later, my home still has lots of wallpaper. I stripped the most offensive wallpaper, but left 2 rooms that I could tolerate. I thought I could restart the project when the twins went to school. But last week, they decided the wallpaper had to go. They started removing it for me. So now I have this in my dining room.

I'm sure it will only get worse. They really like bringing little pieces of paper to me. They are such big helpers!!

A Shout Out To My Sister

This post is for my only (older) sister, Dawn. The other day she said I don't mention her enough in my blog. I told her if she actually started blogging, maybe I would talk about her more. This is my older sister who dreamed of becoming an English teacher and writer. I found these two crazy sisters Emily and The Nester at the last bloggy giveaway. They crack me up. I think my sister and I could be just as funny. So write on dear sister!! I'm waiting patiently....

Mexico

We are back from Mexico. We had a great time. Our whole group stayed healthy and everyone got along great. A few people in our group were strangers to us, but are now our friends. It is great to bond with fellow Christians! Our trip took us to Piedras Negras, Mexico. We went with Crossroads Missions and spent the week building, worshipping, going on outreach, and having fun! If you've never been on a short term mission trip, I urge you to do everything possible to go on one! I have an even greater appreciation for the life I live. It is so easy compared to what I saw last week!

My husband helped dip ice cream when the line was extremely long.

This adorable little boy followed Noah around. My sweet Noah cried when he had to leave his new friend!

Megan had a blast face painting with the girls.

Noah and Brice had a fun time at the market place!

We're Going Down to Mexico!

This will be my last post for over a week. Sad; I know. We leave very early (5 a.m.) on Saturday morning. So the next day and a half will be hectic. We are so excited to be going. Noah will celebrate his 7th birthday in Mexico! My mom will be taking care of Moose and Snipe for the week! So say a little prayer for her. We have high hopes that they will be potty trained when we get back. (Just kidding, Mom!) The weather should be very warm in Piedras Negras (translated Black Rocks), Mexico.

I'm sure I'll have blog withdrawal. Hopefully I'll make it through the week! I did buy myself a new t-shirt for Easter. I love it. Here are some great Easter pics.

Noah and Andrew made a bunny cake on Easter. My mom was supervising. This is how they chose to eat their cake!

Moose didn't like the cake as much as the tube of icing.

And Snipe went straight for the chocolate. Gotta love that boy!

We went to Noah's school tonight for a PE/Art show. Here he is doing a workout to music.

On that note I hope everyone has a great week, and I'll post some Mexico pics when we return!

My 3 phases of Easter Decorating

Once upon a time I was a poor college student. I really wanted some Easter decorations. I talked my friend Tina into buying these wooden eggs and painting them with me. I thought they turned out really well. We talked about taking our talent on the road, but decided against it.

Then I got a real job and had money to spend on whatever I wanted. So I bought lots of Easter decorations (crosses, bunnies, baskets, the works!) Where are they now? In my garage in this large container. The only decorations I got out this year were my painted eggs!

Now I have kids and don't have money to buy new decorations, nor the time to get them out. But I did get to color eggs with my 3 boys tonight. I wouldn't trade all the decorations at Target for these!

Spring Time

We are so ready for warm weather. We got a tease of it last week, but now it's chilly and rainy this week. I don't think it will be warm at all for Easter. With the weather last week, we got hit with more sickness. Steve got the flu, Noah got a nasty stomach virus, and the twins have coughs and runny noses. Megan and I are the only ones who were healthy. I hope it stays that way.

Four of us (Steve, Megan, Noah, and myself) are going to Mexico on a mission trip for spring break. We leave March 29th. The twins are being watched by my mom. We are anxiously getting ready for our trip. Steve and I went to the same place in 2005, but the kids have never been. There are about 60 people from our church going. So it should be a great time.

I made these for dinner last night. They were so good I could not stop eating them!! You should try them!

Organic Toaster Pastries Giveaway!!

I am so excited about this!! The other day my 17 year old daughter asked why I don't buy more organic foods? I came up with the usual list of excuses: cost, convenience, etc.. But it did start the wheels turning in my brain. So fast-forward a couple days later, and I'm in Costco with my neighbor and I see these organic toaster pastries. I was really excited because everyone in my family loves a quick grab-and-go breakfast. So I purchased a box with blueberry and strawberry flavors. My daughter was very excited to have an organic breakfast the next day!! They really taste great, and my boys love them.

I decided to share how pleased we were with the company and asked if they would do a giveaway!! I was so excited when they said yes! So to win some of these great pastries, just leave me a comment with the two choices you think your family would enjoy. I will accept comments until Wednesday, March 19th at 8 p.m. Then I will randomly pick 4 winners. The toaster pastries will be shipped directly from Nature's Path.

You don't have to have a blog to win, but if you leave an anonymous comment, please leave an e-mail address. I'm counting on the 3 people who read my blog to tell lots of people about this!!

I Need Another Bridal Shower!

If anyone is interested in getting me a shower gift, I am currently registered for the following:

1. New saucepans. 2 of mine didn't make it last week. I totally burned some apples in one, and I cannot get it clean. The other pan's non-stick coating has started sloughing off. I noticed this when I was making some no-bake cookies and saw black specks in my mix. I'm sure that is not healthy for anyone!

2. New blender. Mine got broken during Megan's economics project. They made cinnamon rolls and orange juice smoothies to sell. My blender came home cracked beyond recognition. They only profited $12. Not enough to replace my blender!

3. New cereal bowls to match my dishes. I have 5 of the original bowls. With 6 in our family, someone always has to use a plastic straw bowl.

4. New spoons to match my silverware. I have 1 matching spoon left! Where have all the spoons gone?!? My guess is the trash.

5. New bath towels. Our bath towels are very frayed! I use to tell my mom I would NEVER have frayed bath towels. Now I understand there are more important things in life.

So if you happen to be at Target or Bed, Bath, and Beyond this week......Just kidding. I am so thankful for everything I have. I have way more than most. I went to bed warm last night and woke up warm this morning. I could not ask for more!!

The Boys!!

We have seen baby Evan a lot lately. Devin and Dalton are obsessed with his passies (that's what we call them). He has a really cute pacifier with a heart on it. The boys get so excited when Evan cries and gets his heart passy. Today they walked into the kitchen and said, "Mommy, we have passies!" They were so excited about them!

I'm ready for spring!!

We had a little tease of Spring on Sunday. Noah opened the front door and yelled, "Mom, it's Spring. I see flower buds!" He was so excited. Tonight we are supposed to get freezing rain. No more spring for us! I cannot wait to go outside and run around.

Saturday I went to a 12 hour scrapbook crop. It was lots of fun. Once a year I get motivated to work on my albums. Then I promise myself I will finish what I started, then they sit around until this time next year! But I did get a lot of pictures actually put onto pages.

Noah's sunday school class is praying for his mom to not yell so much at home. That is what the adult helper told me when I picked him up from class. Nice. Very nice.

Halfway to 100!!

Here in the blog world, people celebrate their 100th post. Now I know why. It takes a long time to get to 100 (especially for me)! One day I will make it, but until then I will do my best and be consistently inconsistent. Here are some very random pictures of our life.

Megan has been making lots of cookies for her boyfriend. With Valentine's Day, his birthday , and their "anniversary" she's gone a little crazy. Here are her beautiful creations.

Here is what happens when Cookie Monster tries to go potty with a little help. Notice the water soaked floor!

The boys call this picture playing in the leaves. I call this picture "Where's Aunt Heather when I need her?" Aunt Heather organized our toy closet at Christmas, and we need her back!

There is a new song by Trace Adkins called "You're Gonna Miss This". I love it, and it makes me cry! You should definitely listen to it if you're having an "off" day with the kids.
